Matlock Area Recreation and Sports Group (MARS)

Matlock and District Hard of Hearing Club

The Club was started in the early 1970's and has around 50 members. The aim is to provide social and recreational facilities in an atmosphere sympathetic to the hard-of hearing and to keep members informed on services and aids available to the hearing impaired. They have outings, talks, slide shows, craft sessions, a Christmas lunch, Bingo, and a trip to a pantomime, etc. yearly. For appropriate sessions, such as talks and meetings, Derbyshire County Council fund the hire of a speech interpretation service where a computer operator types what is being said and this is shown on a screen.

The Matlock Travel Society provides historic buildings tours for members within reach of Matlock, Buxton, Chesterfield and Derby. Mike Higginbottom runs a programme of five day-visits, starting from Matlock, between the months of March and October.
