Christmas Comes to Matlock after Flooding
Matlock Town Council and Matlock Business Group are delighted to confirm that the Victorian Matlock Christmas Weekend is going ahead as planned from Friday 6th December to Sunday 8th December.
A month ago on Friday 8th November, Matlock suffered the worst flooding for almost 20 years, with shops and businesses being hit and Hall Leys Park being submerged under several feet of water. In the last few weeks, with the help and support of Derbyshire Dales District Council who own and manage the park, contingency plans have been put in place and the event, along with Santa’s Parade and the Christmas lights switch on will be taking place as planned.
Mayor of Matlock, Councillor David Hughes said “We are extremely happy that the event is going ahead since it brings thousands of people to our beautiful town and is very important to the local economy. We would like to thank everyone who has made this possible, in very difficult circumstances, in particular Derbyshire Dales District Council and Alan Scaife of Special Events UK Ltd. We would also like to thank the people and businesses of Matlock for their support, encouragement and resilience during such a trying time”
Geoff Stevens, MBE, Chair of the Joint Christmas Committee said “Twenty five years ago this event was started by the Matlock Business Group as a way of thanking the community of Matlock for their support to local businesses throughout the year. I would like to thank Richard Short, Mick Titley and Jacquie Stevens who still continue to work with myself and the Town Council and their staff to ensure that the event continues. I invite you to come along to celebrate our twenty fifth year and make this a special start to the Christmas Season”.
